That lack of precedence is also a challenge for Janet Brown, a top Alberta pollster and founder of Janet Brown Opinion Research.
No matter how many times she asks respondents about separation, the result is the same: about 25 per cent would vote to separate, with a typical margin of error.
But as Brown told CBC's The House, a lopsided voter turnout could throw everything into disarray.
"If we have a scenario where 100 per cent of separatists get out to vote, and 50 per cent of federalists get out to vote, then suddenly all this polling we're doing is going to be called into question," Brown said.
